French author, the son of a notary, born as François-Marie Arouet in Paris. When Voltaire was ten years old, he was admitted to the famous Jesuit Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris. His father wanted him to become a lawyer, and although Voltaire did study law briefly he decided to become an author early on in life.
