The German author and scholar Hans-Ulrich Treichel was born in the town of Versmold, Westphalia, where his parents settled after they had fled from East Prussia (present-day Poland) at the end of WWII. They lost their oldest son during the escape. This tragic loss was never mentioned within the family, but it deeply affected Treichel during childhood and adolescence.
