Viveca Bergstedt Sten grew up in Stockholm. She spent her summer breaks on the island of Sandhamn in the Stockholm archipelago where her family has owned a house since 1917 when her great grandparents acquired the Lagerta family estate from the son of the master pilot. She read and wrote from an early age, she edited the school magazine and at university she contributed to the law students’ magazine. She wanted to be a journalist until she succumbed to family pressure: her father, grandfather and two of her uncles had studied law. She first graduated from Stockholm University with a law degree and then from the Stockholm School of Economics. Sten was employed by the SAS airline and later at LetsBuyit.com before she went to work for PostNord where she was in charge of a major merger of the Swedish and Danish postal services. She left her job there after nine years and the publication of four crime novels in order to dedicate her time to writing. She was by then hailed by the media for her capacity of managing a full time career job at the same time as she was writing novels and raising three children.
