The Swiss novelist Peter Stamm was born in Scherzingen and grew up in the village of Weinfelden in the canton of Thurgau. His father was an accountant. After primary and secondary school Stamm spent three years as an apprentice accountant and then went on to work in an office while he completed his upper-secondary education. He started to read English in 1987, but dropped out and went to New York where he spent a few months. He then returned to study psychology and psychopathology, but without graduating, a choice based on his interest in writing about people. Stamm has dedicated his time to writing since 1990. He has spent long periods living in Paris, Berlin and London and now lives with his family in Winterthur.
