The American author George Peter Pelecanos was born in Washington D.C. to Greek-American parents. The family moved to Silver Spring, Maryland, near Washington D.C. in 1965 where his father had bought a restaurant. They were hard up, and Pelecanos began to work for his father when he was eleven years old. In 1975, he had to take time off school to look after the restaurant after his father had suffered a heart attack.
