Arthur Asher Miller was an American playwright and author born in New York. His father, a Jewish schoolteacher from Austria, owned a successful ladies outfitters, but he lost everything during the depression, which affected Arthur Miller deeply. The family moved to a small house in Brooklyn that is believed to be the model for the house in which his most famous play, Death of a Salesman, takes place. Miller enjoyed football, baseball and adventure stories, and at the time he did not appear to have intellectual interests. After finishing high school in 1932 he sold spare parts for cars in order make money so he could continue his studies.
