The Polish author Adam Mickiewicz grew up in the village of Zaosie near Novogrudok, then the Lithuanian part of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth that had been incorporated in the Russian Empire a few years earlier. He was to spend his entire life fighting for Polish independence. He is regarded as the greatest Slavic poet of the 19th century alongside Alexander Pushkin and he is the national poet of Poland.
