The American author and journalist Frances Lockridge was born as Frances Davis in Kansas City in Missouri, where she also grew up. After finishing school in the town, she studied at the University of Kansas in Lawrence and subsequently, 1918–22, worked as a reporter and music critic on the Kansas City Post. In 1922, she married Richard Lockridge, left her newspaper job and was instead very involved with a national institution for adoptions for 20 years. Her literary debut was the non-fiction work How to Adopt a Child (1928), incidentally the only book she wrote without help from her husband.
