Norwegian author, born and grew up in a middle-class environment in Grorud, an Oslo suburb. His father, Leif Asbjørn Kjærstad, was a furniture agent, his mother, Ragnhild Jensen, a secretary. Kjærstad says that he had a happy childhood.
