Maria Joan Hyland's childhood was chaotic. Her father was an alcoholic and a liar as a young man, he continued to drink, fight and commit crime after his two children were born, and he spent large parts of his life in prison, mental institutions and in rehabilitation, according to an interview with M.J. Hyland in the London Review of Books, published in connection with the release of her first novel.
