The Czech author Petra Hulová was born in Prague, former Czechoslovakia. She grew up with two fathers and many stepsisters and brothers. Hulová became interested in Mongolia after reading anthropology at the University of Prague and watching Urga, a film by Nikita Michalkov. She studied the languages and culture of Mongolia, and she spent a year there as an exchange student. She has a degree in cultural sciences and spent a year in the United States on a Fulbright scholarship in 2004–05. She runs an internet café in Prague together with her husband that has become a meeting place for young writers and book lovers. Her husband, a lecturer and translator, teaches contemporary Czech literature. Hulová is also among the founders of a new Czech author’s association. She lives in Prague with her husband and two children.
