Mohsin Hamid was born in Pakistan. His father was a first generation Pakistani born in 1947, the year of partition. Mohsin was born in Lahore, when Pakistan was divided and East Pakistan became Bangladesh. The eighties were troubled times. President Zia-ul-Haq sided with the United States against the Soviet Union and Lahore was inundated with arms and heroin, by-products of the war in neighbouring Afghanistan.
