The Danish journalist and author Sara Blædel spent her early life in the Copenhagen district of Østerbro. When she was about eleven years old, the family moved to their former holiday home near Hvalsø in central Jutland where she grew up an only child. Her father was the well-known journalist Leif Blædel and her mother the actor Annegrethe Nissen. As a young girl, Sara Blædel loved horses, and she had her own dressage horse, but she also enjoyed listening to her mother reading aloud to her from classic crime novels at bedtime.
