Hugo Ball was born in Pirmasens, Germany, to Catholic parents who were as poor as they were pious. He wanted to study, but he was not able to get his father to accept this until after he had gone through a severe personal crisis. He studied at Munich and Heidelberg with the intention of writing a dissertation on Nietzsche, but he never did.
