Alexander Ahndoril, born Gustafsson, grew up in a middle-class family in the Stockholm suburb of Upplands Väsby. His grandparents came from the working class, and his father was the first one in his family who had been able to continue studies at upper secondary school. Ahndoril himself decided to quit upper secondary school when 16 years old. After supplementary adult studies, however, he has later studied among other things cinema, religion and philosophy at Stockholm University. Ahndoril is since 1996 married to Alexandra Coehlo Ahndoril, who also has had a successful career as an author. They have also written together under the pseudonym Lars Kepler. In 2009, they published under much mystery-mongering the crime novel The Hypnotist (Hypnotisören), which received much media attention, especially after the identity of the real authors had been revealed.
