Milo Sturgis
Male
Sturgis is a well-built, rather plump detective with the Los Angeles Police. And he is openly homosexual too – which causes him some problems – and co-habits with Richard ‘Rick’ Silverman, a doctor and orthodox Jew. Sturgis has an M.A. in Literature, loves fruit and is a secondary character in Jonathan Kellerman’s books about psychologist Alex Delaware. He does, however, have the main role in some of them.

Sean Duffy
Male
A young – he was born in 1950 – police detective posted in Carrickfergus in Northern Ireland during the 1980s. The IRA struggles are at their worst, and Sean Patrick Duffy doesn’t have an easy time as a Catholic in the Protestant Northern Ireland, according to author Adrian McKinty. Duffy has dark, curly hair and blue eyes, is temporarily single, likes listening to classical music and has hidden a bit of hashish in his garage.

Van Veeteren
Male
Despite his successful career as a detective chief inspector, he tires of his job, and starts afresh as an antiquarian bookseller. But he continues to play an important role in Håkans Nesser’s books about the police in Maardam. Van Veeteren is a well-built and heavy man, he has a bass voice, is divorced and has been operated for stomach cancer. He is very fond of classical music and dark beer, and likes to chew on a toothpick.

Ludwig Licht
Male
An odd character, he started his career as an agent for Stasi, moved over to the CIA and then tried to make his way in the restaurant business, but instead became a freelance spy. Thomas Engström has created an anti-hero in Ludwig Licht, whose father was a Nazi. He is addicted to alcohol and amphetamines, is always irritated and usually looks rather the worse for wear and in need of a haircut – ‘like a drug addict who has to give evidence in a court of law’.
