Kirsten Thorup is a Danish author born as Kirsten Christensen at Gelsted on Funen island. Her father, Svend Christensen, was a tobacconist. Kirsten grew up with her older brothers and passed her baccalaureate at Fredericia in 1961. After a year of working as an au pair in England and studying at Cambridge University, she moved to Copenhagen. While abroad, she discovered the joy of writing by corresponding with friends and family. She married theatre director Ib Thorup in 1963, and they had a daughter, Aja. Thorup pursued various clerical professions while reading English and literature at the University of Copenhagen without graduating. She has been a full-time author since 1970.
