James Myers "Jim" Thompson was born in Anadarko, Oklahoma. His father was of Scottish origin while his mother had Cherokee roots, of which the son was very proud. As an author, he went pretty much unnoticed during his lifetime: it was first in the 1970s that literary researchers started to discuss his books, and after his death, he has come to be acknowledged as one of the most important names in modern American literature, and even dubbed as "the crime writer’s Dostoyevsky". Several of his novels are today thought to be classics, and he is considered as one of the most prominent names when it comes to the hard-boiled "noir" school in the USA.
