Marin Sorescu was a leading Romanian poet and playwright as well as a translator of poetry. He was born on February 29, 1936, and grew up in the village of Bulzesti, situated in the southern province of Oltenia. He studied modern languages at the University of Iasi, graduating in 1960. During this period he also contributed to literary magazines.
