Zadie Smith, born Sadie Adeline Smith, grew up in Kilburn and Willesden Green, north-west London, with her two younger brothers. Her mother, Yvonne Baily, is Jamaican and her father, Harvey Smith is English. They are now divorced. She changed the spelling of her first name at the age of fourteen.
