American author born in New York to a successful Jewish lawyer and cheese importer, and his Scottish-Irish wife. The family owned a beautiful apartment on Park Avenue. J.D. (Jerome David) Salinger attended several schools before he was sent to the Valley Forge Military Academy 1935–1936. In 1937, he spent five months in Vienna, London and other European cities to improve his German and French, and he was meant to get to know the "pork industry" in which his father saw his future. Salinger then studied at the universities of Pennsylvania and New York and participated in a creative writing programme led by With Burnett, founder of The Story Magazine.
