René Lodge Brabazon Raymond was born in London. His father was an army officer who wanted his son to study science, but instead he moved away from home and became a bookseller. He married in 1933 and began to write in order to support his family. His chief inspiration was James M. Cain’s classical novel The Postman Always Rings Twice (1934).
