Dame Hilary Mary Mantel was born Hilary Thompson in Glossop, Derbyshire, and she grew up in Hadfield. Her parents were both of Irish descent so Mantel attended a Roman Catholic primary school and a then a convent school. As her father left the family when Mantel was eleven years old, she took the name of her stepfather.
