Lawrence, D.H.

The English author D.H. (David Herbert) Lawrence was born in the mining district of Nottinghamshire. His parents came from very different types of environment; his father was a miner while his mother had grown up in a middle-class family. The author's childhood and adolescence were characterized by hard conditions, and his frail health made it impossible for him to work in the mines. A scholarship helped him to study at Nottingham High School for three years, after which he worked as a clerk and as a non-qualified teacher. In 1906, the future author studied at a local university to obtain a degree as a teacher. He managed to get a teaching position in Croydon outside London, but his bad health forced him to leave this profession. Instead D.H. Lawrence devoted himself solely to literature, and he would become amazingly productive.
