Norwegian author, born and raised in a working-class Oslo suburb. He read theology at the University of Oslo for six years with a view to becoming a priest. He then switched to architecture before he decided to become an author. Between 1985 and 1989, he edited the Norwegian literary review Vinduet. He then lived in Zimbabwe for three years.
