English poet born in Mytholmroyd in the West Riding of Yorkshire. When he was seven years old, the family moved to Mexborough in south Yorkshire where his parents owned a newsagent's and tobacconist's shop. Ted had a sister, Olwyn, who was two yeas older and a brother, Gerald, who was ten years older.
