The Swedish author Lars Gustafsson was born in Västerås where his father was a merchant. He passed his baccalaureate in 1955 and was awarded a Licentiate Degree from the University of Uppsala in 1961. From the 1960s onwards he was a public figure that often participated in the public debate. He was editor of the literary magazine BLM between 1962 and 1972 and book reviewer for the tabloid Expressen and from 1981 the national daily Svenska Dagbladet. Lars Gustafsson often travelled abroad; he lived in West Berlin between 1970 and 1972, and in 1982 he settled in Austin, Texas, where he was Professor of Philosophy and German Studies at the University of Texas at Austin.
