Ginsberg, Allen

American poet born in Newark, New Jersey. His father, Louis, was also a poet and teacher. His mother was a Russian, left-wing, émigré. When he left high school in 1943 he planned to read law, but he changed his mind after winning a scholarship to Columbia University, New York, and chose English literature instead.
