The German author of prose, playwright, translator and critic Lion Jacob Arje Feuchtwanger grew up in a wealthy Jewish family in Munich. His father was a businessman. Lion passed his baccalaureate at the prestigious Wilhelmsgymnasium and went on to study philosophy, literature and anthropology in Munich and Berlin. He was awarded a PhD in 1907 with a thesis on Heinrich Heine.
