The American author Vera Caspary spent a great deal of time and effort writing her popular screen and stage plays, but she is best known for her crime fiction, a reputation that largely rests on the psychological thriller Laura (1943), an important classic, a major box office success in 1944 and an equally popular Broadway play in 1945. Her novels have made a comeback in the 2000s after being rediscovered by a number of feminist authors.
