Carver, Raymond

American author who was born in Clatskanie, Oregon, and grew up in Yakima, Washington. His father was a sawmill worker with a drinking problem and his mother a waitress. When he was eighteen years old, Raymond Carver married Maryann Burk, who was sixteen at the time. By the age of twenty, he was working nights to support his wife and two children.
